Hi friends. As many of you know, Brian McKinlay was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on Friday, June 29th on his way to work. He was taken by ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and due to the severity of his injuries was immediately admitted into the ICU, in critical condition, where he underwent multiple surgeries.
Brian has multiple fractured (shattered) thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and had surgery on his back the same day as the accident. They placed 8 screws in his vertebrae along with rods and a box to help support his spine. He suffered many broken ribs; 10 on the right side and 4 on the left which punctured his lungs and liver. The liver puncture bled into his lung and a chest tube had to be placed along with a coil into his liver to get the bleeding under control. Brian also broke his right femur and had surgery on Saturday, June 30th when they inserted a rod. His injuries also include a fractured pelvis and a large chunk out of his calf. He has no feeling in his lower abdomen or in his feet and toes. On Sunday, July 1st he had another surgery, rib plating, due to the number of fractured ribs he has, and he is in a TLSO brace that he will need to wear for a minimum of 12 weeks. Currently, Brian is stable and has recently begun physical therapy.
Anyone that knows Brian, knows he is a loving husband, father, and amazing friend. He has a long road to recovery but is a fighter and with his wife Rohni by his side, they will fight this battle one day at a time.
Many have asked what they can do to help. At this time, I think the best way we can help is with prayers, positive thoughts, and financial support so Brian and Rohni can focus on his recovery. A donation of any amount will be greatly appreciated in helping our beloved friend.
