Caring For Kaia
Donation protected
How much is a doggie's life worth? For me and my family, it is invaluable! We've always believed in Pet Rescue (had two dogs and a cat who were the most loving companions for us). I decided a couple of months ago that I was ready to try and save another life. After searching for a long time and putting in about 30 applications, it was just about three weeks ago that I adopted 4 month old Kaia through a local Pet Rescue Organization. It was instant love when Baby Kaia came into our lives and quickly stole our hearts. And now, our hearts are breaking because this sweet little being is very sick.
Here's my and Kaia's story ...
Two days after taking her home, Kaia exhibited some signs of unwellness - some slight wheezing, a minor cough, and low grade temperature. Our Vet took x-rays which showed no signs of pneumonia or lung issues but just to be safe she was put on an antibiotic. Kaia was a spunky puppy and seemed okay for a few days but then she became very lethargic and developed a seriously high fever. She spent two nights at the Veterinary Emergency Hospital where she had bloodwork and more x-rays. The bloodwork indicated a low white count which suggested some kind of infection. They treated her with intravenous fluids and medications, got the fever down and white count up but then her platelets were extremely low showing the possibility of anemia or immune deficiency. She was released to our care after doctors checked for bleeding/clotting problems and deemed to be satisfactory enough to go home with another CBC (Complete Blood Count) to be done by our own Vet in 24 hours ...

Not so good update on Kaia ...
It seems our puppy and the others in her litter may have been exposed to Distemper in Mississippi before they received their initial vaccinations for it. Not only Kaia but the others are now sick as well.
The situation has gone from joyful to heartbreaking to what seemed like hopeful improvement (with her on three antibiotics and having continuing bloodtests) but we are still in the limbo torture of not knowing how affected Kaia is ... What we do know is that Distemper can be fatal ... she is now receiving an expensive hospital treatment but there is no cure.
I believe in prayer. I also believe that animals can do things for people that people simply cannot. While Baby Kaia came to me and my family at just the right moment, she also came to us sick. Our time has been fraught with several trips back and forth to Vets and Emergency Medical Facilities, also lots of $$$, but when facing tough decisions about her supportive care, the only choice for us is to try to save her life! Would you please say a prayer for her and send healing energy this way for a full and speedy recovery so that we may show her the kind of love she has already shown us.
I mean ... That FACE! :)
I now find myself in the uncomfortable position of having to ask for help. The expenses for Kaia's medical care have gone through the roof, to date over $5000 and are ongoing ...
If you would like to support me and are able to, I would be more than grateful for any donation ...
After all, as John Lennon once said, "I get by with a little help from my friends ..."
In gratitude and
with love, Sara
