save Gus

Over ten years ago, as an anxious 20 year old college student,  I fostered a baby kitten after his mom had been hit by a car. He was 5 days old- his eyes and ears were closed, and he weighed only a few ounces in my palm. I bottle fed him,  nurtured him and ended up falling so deeply in love I couldn’t give him up. A decade later, Gus has come with me on no less than five plane rides across the country, lived in three states, and been the defining constant of my life. He has seen me through severe illness, tragedy, death and heartbreak, growth and successes. He quite literally licks my tears away when I cry. He has won over the hearts of countless roommates and friends, all of whom are astounded by his human-like ability to stare into your soul and his deep emotionality. Anyone who has known me has inevitably been touched by this giant 16 pound dude.

After a few months of acting funny, we discovered that Gus has a large tumor in his duodenum, part of the small intestine. It is protruding so much that it’s created a partial blockage, and the resulting inflammation has given him acute pancreatitis.  It is likely cancerous. An expert team of surgeons and diagnostic veteranarians are weighing emergency surgery to  cut out the section of his intestine which contains the mass or serious long term chemotherapy if it is inoperable. Either way, the prognosis requires extensive treatment if we have a chance at saving him.

Gus is only ten, but he’s full of life, energy and exuberance. He’s got a whole decade left in him- to know my future children and move to at least a few more houses. This is a crazy expensive and risky surgery, but I’m not yet ready to say goodbye to my first child and the love of my life.

Anything you can give helps. Thank you for loving Gus <3
