Relief Fund for Undocumented Families in Bexar Co.

As Community Health Workers, we have been challenged with being frontline Promotoras during the escalation of COVID-19 cases in San Antonio, Texas. We have been working to aid our local community with things like food box deliveries, health education and housing assistance. In this work, we become the advocates and voices for people with multiple complex needs that do not have the physical, emotional or sociological means to fend for themselves. Right now we feel it is important to share the message that one of the most forgotten communities in Bexar County is suffering beyond the norm of discrimination they face. We are asking for your help because we, nor they, do not know what else to do.
Recently we have been dealing collectively with private landlords and government over the payment’s of undocumented families’ suffrage with Rental Assistance. Most of them are under a month to month cash lease and not contracted under a written lease agreement. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of these verbal, private leasing agreements. As has been the pandemic norm with Community Health, we’ve directed our cases to Mayor Nirenburg’s City Wide Moratorium and Risk Mitigation Housing Fund, but this does not stop their landlords from harassing or threatening to call ICE on them. It is awful and a serious case of fear mongering. As of Tuesday April 14, 2020, one of the families received a call from the city telling them that they were unable to qualify for the Risk Mitigation Fund because of their immigration status.
The undocumented immigrant community has faced job loss in the construction, hospitality and domestic worker fields. These are positions that provide no benefits, financial security or ability to work from home. They are also unable to file for unemployment, receive Stimulus checks or receive any kind of government funding.This population is not protected in any way, so much that a family has expressed to us that at their church group- they are left with the “scraps” of the food bulk and not granted the “good stuff” like the citizens who are fluent in English and identify as American citizens. It is imperative to re-examine the practices of the American way and discrimination during contemporary globalization and this crisis. The amplified non-citizen rhetoric that has intensified during this pandemic is abusive and dismissive of human rights, even more so at our local and state levels of government here in Bexar County.
Most of the families we are working with are unable to navigate through the internet or phones like the average US Citizen. Most, if not all, do not speak English. We are asking for this financial support to distribute to them and their families. Having to worry about Coronavirus, housing and deportation is beyond what anyone should be experiencing right now.
The families we will serve with this fund are undocumented individuals with no rights or ability to pay their rent due to CoVid 19 job-loss. Families will be served with a form of reproductive justice lens through this fund. The following is a breakdown of how families can or will be aided:
-1 or more child(ren), pregnant, single parent, reproductive cancer, trans-identifying
-Complex immigration status as in family deportation, children are documented but not parents, elders
-From Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, et cetera- from areas of war and least access to asylum process
For now, we have a total of 9 undocumented families in need of rental assistance and whatever is received will go directly to them. However, we are asking for $30,000 because the effects of this pandemic on South Texas will be widespread and linger for a long time and we are preparing to aid at least 40 families with this fund. Please help support these families that are hurting in unimaginable ways right now. Not only do they fear for their families being separated by the bureaucracies of our system, but they are terrified of what this virus can do to the lifelines they sustain..in their homes and in their native countries. Please help!

Hemos estado trabajando para ayudar a nuestra comunidad local con cosas como entregas de cajas de comida, educación para la salud y asistencia para renta. En este trabajo, nos convertimos en defensoras y voces para personas con múltiples necesidades complejas que no tienen los medios físicos, emocionales o sociológicos para en paz en este pais. En este momento creemos que es pertinente compartir el mensaje de que una de las comunidades más olvidadas del condado de Bexar está sufriendo más de lo normal de discriminación que enfrentan. Estamos pidiendo su ayuda porque nosotros, ni ellos, sabemos qué más hacer.
Recientemente, hemos estado en contacto colectivamente con propietarios privados y el gobierno por ayuda de renta para familias indocumentadas. La mayoría de estas familias tienen un contrato de arrendamiento en efectivo mensual y no están contratados bajo un contrato de arrendamiento que esta escrito. Hay cientos, tal vez miles, de estos typos de contratos de arrendamiento privados verbales. Como lo que hacemos a la norma entre esta pandemia con Community Health, hemos dirigido nuestros casos al Fondo de Vivienda para Mitigación de Riesgos y Moratoria de la Ciudad del Mayor Nirenburg, pero esto no impide que sus propietarios los amenacen con llamar a ICE. Es horrible y un caso grave de discriminacion. A partir del martes 14 de abril de 2020, una de nuestras familias recibió una llamada de la ciudad diciéndoles que no podían calificar para el Fondo de Mitigación de Riesgos debido a su estado migratorio.
La comunidad de inmigrantes indocumentados se ha enfrentado a la pérdida de empleos en las areas de la construcción, la hospitalidad y el trabajo doméstico. Estos son puestos que no brindan beneficios, seguridad financiera o capacidad para trabajar desde casa. Tampoco pueden solicitar el desempleo, recibir cheques de Stimulus o recibir ningún tipo de financiación del gobierno. Esta población no está protegida de ninguna manera, tanto que una familia nos ha expresado que en su grupo de la iglesia, se quedan con las "sobras "de la mayor parte de la comida y no se les alcanza las "cosas buenas "como los ciudadanos que hablan inglés con fluidez e identifican como ciudadanos estadounidenses. Es imperativo reexaminar las prácticas del estilo estadounidense y la discriminación durante la globalización contemporánea y esta crisis.
