“It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home”
We wanted to introduce you to some amazing people we've met here in Costa Rica - Geysel, Oscar, their kids Ashley, Marvel, Chelsea, and their precious granddaughter Sofia. This incredible family is facing a tough situation and needs our help.
Geysel and Oscar left their hearts back home in Nicaragua - their children and their sweet little granddaughter Sofia. They came to Costa Rica as migrant workers last year, with the promise of a better life and a chance to build a future. Knowing that the sacrifices were necessary due to the current climate in Nicaragua and the poverty they faced there.
So they took an “opportunity” with a land owner in hopes of sending money back home to their children for food and education; hoping they could also save a little each month to eventually build a home for their family they would one day return to (you can see the condition of their family of 6’s current shelter in Nicaragua the pictures)
Despite this dream, upon arrival things didn't go as planned. What started as a dream turned into a nightmare. One where they were left without food, underpaid, and living in poor unsanitary living circumstances.
We met them along our own travels here and quickly became wonderful friends inspired by such genuine, hardworking, honest humans.
Through them, we've seen firsthand the horrible conditions and treatment by employers of migrant workers due to their vulnerable and desperate circumstances. But we've also seen something even stronger - their love for their family and their determination to fight for them. They’ve touched our hearts deeply and have become like family to us. Even with the language barrier (a mix of hand gestures, Spanglish, and translation apps!), we feel beyond blessed to have built a beautiful friendship with them during our time here in Costa Rica. Despite their own struggles, they've opened their hearts to us, showing us the true meaning of strength, faith and positivity.
We've been doing everything we can - groceries, supplies, finding side cleaning jobs for Geysel - they are honest hard workers and even continue to work hard and live on the land they were brought to, despite the mistreatment. The support we give through this are just temporary fixes. They cannot keep living the way they are and need a longer term solution.
Here's the dream: We want to help Geysel and Oscar get home to Nicaragua, reunite with their kids and build that little house they've been dreaming of. A house where they can set up a little shop for income
to support their family with basic life necessities. So with the help of our dear friend Kerin, who has been touched by Oscar and Geysel and heartbroken by their story, we decided together to launch this project.
So we are reaching out to all of you to help us support Oscar and Geysel to get out of these harsh work conditions and make their dreams a reality.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to cover the costs for getting them home to Nicaragua, covering the costs of materials and construction of their home, and starting materials for a home based business to self sustain themselves for the long run. No longer needing to be in these terrible work conditions through the kindness of friends and compassionate humans like you.
We know how lucky we are to be able to put our heads down on our pillows each night, in our cozy beds, under the roof of our homes; knowing tomorrow we have enough to put food on the table for our children. All with the awareness of how many others don’t live in this privilege. A larger issue to tackle, but for today the opportunity to make a change by helping this one incredible family. My wish is to know they too are back in their own country, sleeping soundly in their own beds, under the same roof as their children, knowing for tomorrow there is food and hope for their family’s future. That miracles do happen. Be it through our inner own strength and resilience, or through the compassion of strangers.
We're so grateful for the chance to share Geysel, Oscar, and their family's story with you. Any contribution no matter how much is appreciated. Every bit helps, and they'll be incredibly grateful for your generosity.
If you donate and leave your email, we'll send you updates on their journey!
With lots of love,
