Matilda’s Surgery

This year we had to spend Valentines in the animal ER. Our dog Matilda was hit by a car after a trip to the dog park. She is only 4 years old. A loving dog mom to  8 puppies. The car ran over her right leg, fracturing the bones. She needs reconstructive surgery to correct all the fractures in her leg so that the bones can heal properly. The fractured bone punctured her skin leaving a big open wound. She is still in the ER going through procedures to prevent any infections in her leg since the bones were exposed.

We paid a huge bill last night to the animal hospital. Total cost for SCU care, X-ray, electrolyte plus, PCV, blood pressure indirect, plasmalyte, anesthesia, total emergency charges, splint with bandage, and injectable drug was $5,758.28. That is just the first one.

Matilda is still in the animal hospital since Monday night. We were given another estimated total cost for procedures, complexity of care, and Matilda’s response to treatment. We were given two options by the animal hospital. Either go forward with the medical treatment that she needs to recover in a healthy manner. We have to pay upfront for surgical treatment. If we can’t pay upfront then Matilda goes home without proper care.

The staff at AMC will do what they can based on our finances. We hope she recovers while thinking of all the risks of the bones not healing properly which would lead to more complications in the future. We would risk an infection and amputation of Matilda’s leg.

She is such a loving, smart, loyal, protective dog and having to witness her run into the street made my heart stop. Something spooked her on the walk home that made her panic. She slipped through her collar and ran into the street. I jumped in front of the car telling the driver to stop but the driver didn’t stop and continued till he hit Matilda. When the driver noticed that he hit her, he just looked and drove off. I honestly didn’t know what to do I was also holding our other dog Lennon. Do I chase down the car or run to Matilda to help her? She yelped and limped to the side of the street to lay down, raising her bloody crushed leg. Our hearts are broken.

Now, we are here asking for some help to give Matilda the proper medical treatment she needs so she could run around again.
