Hello, and thank you for taking the time to view this page! If nothing else, please take a minute to read what I have to say:
Ever since I was aware of it, I've always been fascinated with the world outside of what I call mine. One hundred and ninety-five countries lay across the Earth -- each one with its own unique mark amongst the rest. There is a massive world out there that I've seen nothing of, and finally an opportunity has appeared -- an opportunity that hangs only a hair out of reach.
I've recently been accepted into a program to study abroad in Tokyo, Japan for six weeks this summer (May 18 - July 1). The program itself will offer language courses while giving me countless opportunities to learn about Japan's profound history and rich, wonderful culture! It's truly an exciting thought to imagine myself venturing into a world that is, without a doubt, very different from my own. With an immensely old culture that had evolved through the centuries of antiquity to become the fascinating place it is today, Japan has always been my top choice. Click here to read about my program!
With that in mind, I should also mention why I'm hoping to study abroad there in the first place...
I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering at the University of North Texas, and wish to one day work on photovoltaic (PV) systems. A PV system is one that converts light into electrivity by means of semiconducting materials -- a process which has been named the "photovoltaic effect." For more information on that, click here!
What does this have to do with Japan? First and foremost, Japan is one of the top manufacturers of photovoltaic systems in the entire world. In 2013 and 2014 Japan was second in PV installations worldwide, dropping to third in 2015 with a rough cumulative capacity of 34,000 megawatts. With its remarkable creations such as the Solar Ark , a PV power generation facility/museum, as well as the world's largest floating solar farm , Japan has shown the world what this form of renewable energy is capable of.
It is hopefully becoming clear how this ties in with my aspirations to study abroad. I may not be studying abroad for photovoltaics this time, but if I genuinely enjoy Japan as a country then I will put strong consideration into a commitment to pursue a career there as an electrical engineer! The dream of experiencing my future career in a foreign country has always felt too good to be true. Now, however, it's beginning to feel very possible. I couldn't be more excited, and I'm prepared to do as much as I can to grab ahold of this dream! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Thanks to the partnership my university has with IES , a door has been unlocked that only needs to be opened. To open it, I will need your help! The tuition, housing, and insurance will amount to $6,850. Along with that, I will need another $2,000 for my flight as well as any other personal expenses (meals, international cell phone, domestic travel, etc.) in order to make this happen!
I've been doing my best to fare well in school while working as much as possible. Furthermore, I've won the IEFS (International Education Fee Scholarship) for a total of $750. I will apply for more as they come, but because summer programs are not eligible for as much money, these scholarships will not support me enough to ensure that my trip will happen. I will fall short around three thousand dollars.
Thus, I'm reaching out to all of you! This is a very exciting opportunity, and with the help of my friends and family it can beome a life-changing reality!
If you're unable to donate, I thank you temendously for taking the time to read what I wanted to say!
I truly appreciate any donation. No amount is too little! As is stated in a great Japanese proverb:
Even dust amassed will grow into a mountain.
