My dad, Ken Scott, was diagnosed with Stage III Esophageal Cancer earlier this month. The tumor is in his lower esophagus, extending into his upper stomach. He has a tough battle ahead of him and needs our help!
His doctors have outlined a tri-modality therapy approach (chemotherapy/radiation/surgery) to fight the cancer. He started his weekly chemo treatments today (6 rounds in total). His daily radiation treatments (28 rounds in total) start on Monday. Following this course of treatments, he will have a six-week healing period. His doctors will utilize this time to assess the scans to see if the tumor has responded well to the treatment. If a second course of treatment is not needed, they will proceed with surgery.
The surgery he will receive is called an Esophagectomy, which will consist of the removal of at least 2 inches of his esophagus above the tumor and at least 2 inches below, including the upper portion of his stomach. The surrounding tissues containing the nearby lymph nodes will also be removed. The recovery from this surgery will consist of two weeks in the hospital, as well as requiring a feeding tube for 4-6 weeks post-op.
In August of 2021, my sister was diagnosed with Stage IV Breast Cancer. During that time, my parents fully supported her with whatever she needed. This took a toll on them not only mentally, but also financially.
My parents are self-employed and pay out-of-pocket for their insurance, which makes this unfortunate news pack a bigger punch. Every step of this treatment comes with a significant cost. One that will be very difficult to manage alone along with the stresses of the treatment.
Anything you can donate to help alleviate the financial burden of this treatment will be truly appreciated more than I can say. Doing everything we can to help support my parents however they need and surround my dad with positive energy will be critical in the coming months. We want him to be able to focus solely on fighting and beating this cancer without worrying about anything else. Please help us spread the word any way you can.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
