Hi friends! As many of you know, last October, Sam and I became the luckiest dog dads when we adopted our perfect little guy, Buddy.
He has been a dream come true and better than any pet we could have asked for, and immediately became an irreplaceable part of our family.
At the beginning of May, during a controlled diet change, Buddy experienced symptoms of AHDS (acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome, for those who want to know. And yes—that is as bad as it sounds), which ended up bringing him to an overnight stay at Blue Pearl Emergency Veterinarian Hospital in Hell’s Kitchen to administer IV fluid therapy as well as a slew of medications to put his GI tract back in order.
With Sam and I following all of the outpatient instructions, Buddy continued to make progress—touch and go, but steady—until last night (5/29/2025), when he took a sudden turn for the worse and his bloody diarrhea and vomiting symptoms came back worse than they were in the first place. Quickly, his diarrhea became very bloody and extremely persistent, so we rushed him back to the emergency vet this morning, where he is currently getting his hydration in order and stabilizing the AHDS symptoms.
We now know that this is caused by an underlying issue, although to determine what exactly, we will have to do several different blood panels, ultrasounds, etc. The ER doctor has said it is most likely one of three things: IBD (like IBS for humans), Addison’s Disease, or a parasitic issue. All of these are treatable with long-term medication, but the road to determining what is causing these issues with Buddy is long and expensive.
Both stays at the Emergency Vet were between $2,090-$2,850. The testing will be at least another $1,000-$1,500. Thank goodness that Sam and I have pet insurance for Buddy, but it doesn’t come close to covering everything, and this mixed with other recent strokes of misfortune have left Sam and I up shit creek without a paddle—metaphorically, of course.
Buddy is family—and him not getting the care he needs is never and will never be an option, however strenuous it may be financially. We experience every day how hard it is to make it in this world, and we do not expect anything from this except wishes of better health for Buddy. If you are in a place to do so and would like to donate to a cause that is right in your backyard, please consider helping us get Buddy the care he needs. I promise in return a cuddle session with Buddy once he is on the mend!
Thank you all for your continued friendship, love, and support of all types
