My name is maddie.
2020 has been a roller coaster for a lot people we know and love.
Personally 2020 was a year of growth and some big successes. However, I watched a lot of people that I love struggle. Whether that was for money due to lack of work, increased alcohol and drug consumption, poor mental health due to everything going on in the world and feeling stuck inside their own heads/homes and so many people losing the ones they love.
2020 was the year my dad decided to get sober! I am so proud of my dad and I have been thinking of ways to support him through this journey, while giving back to others who can’t get there just yet and are still struggling with their mental health/addictions. 2020 was also the year the world lost Wayne. Wayne is my beautiful friend Ryleigh’s dad.
So, instead of setting myself 10 new year resolutions, I am setting myself 1. Which is to spend 2021 sober to raise more awareness around mental illnesses and how we can support the people we love and reduce the rate of suicide.
I’ll share this post throughout each month, you are welcome to share it aswell. Any donations raised will be given to the black dog institute.
“1 in 5 of us will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year. In Australia that’s around 5 million people. And roughly 60% of these people won’t seek help”- black dog institute.
Being sober for this year will also kick some bad habits I have formed over the years. I’m keen to see what it brings!
