**Updated to include Housing while in NYC: $800!
In less than 10 days, I am taking six of my former students to Yale University and New York City. Each of these African American young men will partake in conversations and attend events throughout NYC and Yale that will give shape to their future goals and connect them to a diversity of people and networks: bankers, lawyers, consultants, entrepreneurs, college students, artists, etc. With the pressing statistics facing black men in New Orleans: 52% of black men unemployed, 1 out of every 7 black men in prison, on parole or on probation, the main goal is to introduce these black men to careers and opportunities that are unimaginable and seemingly unattainable. I am hoping to shift perceptions of what success looks like for these six through meaningful exposure.
Furthermore, while in New York City, we are hoping to engage in several events during the Easter weekend that illuminates the American Dream and grounds the students in past, present and future. Our challenge, however, from gaining the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime experience is cost of transportation and admission fees once we are there:
7-Day MetroCard Unlimited Pass: $31 x 7 people total: $ 217.00
Statue of Liberty: $21 x 7 total: $147.00
American Museum of Natural History: $22 x 7 total: $154.00
9/11 Tribute Center: $15.00 x 7 total: $95.00
Top of the Rock/Empire State Building Observation Deck: $29.00 x 7 = $203.00
Housing while in New York City: $800
Total Cost: $1626.00
