Dolittle Dreams Animal Sanctuary in Need of Hay

Dolittle Dreams Animal Sanctuary is a Non-Profit organization located in Florence, Montana. Approximately 200 animals, both furry and feathered, call Dolittle Dreams home. Unfortunately, due to an unprecedented hay shortage happening right now in the state of Montana, we are in dire need of hay to feed our rescued animals until next year’s hay season.

The hay shortage is a direct result of drought conditions that have worsened this year throughout Montana and many other western states. Consequently, this has led to skyrocketing prices for hay since a lot of it is coming from out of state suppliers.

Being a small animal sanctuary, we don’t have the cash on hand or cash reserves to compete with larger farms and ranches who are buying the hay in large quantities to sustain their livestock.

Dolittle Dreams is a small non-profit organization, funded primarily with the income we make at our full time jobs and an occasional donation that helps with the day to day, week to week, and month to month costs of feed, vet bills, farrier visits, equipment purchase/repairs, shelters, fencing, truck maintenance, and many other costs associated with running an animal sanctuary. We have been fortunate to have local hay suppliers for the last 10 years that we’ve been rescuing animals but because of the drought and extreme heat conditions, our local suppliers will not be able to supply us because production is not what it normally is.

This is our very first fundraiser as a Non-Profit organization which is why we call it bold, and audacious, because we realize is this a HUGE ask, and a BIG goal, but we just don’t have the money needed to truck in the 16 tons of hay required to feed our horses, ponies, goats, and donkey until first cutting 2022. Unlike many cattle ranches who are now forced to cut their herds in size in order to make it through this next winter, our ‘herd’ is family, they are our friends. We took them in with the promise we would care for them and let them live out their natural lives in peace so we need to act swiftly, and boldly, to make sure we can keep our promise to these beautiful animals.

We know the goal is set high to raise money needed for hay so we can feed everyone until next hay season. Our animals are beautiful, wonderful, trusting souls, who are living their lives without a care or worry in the world right now, unaware of the urgent need and stress that their humans are facing in order to provide for them as we promised we would.

Our need is urgent to get a delivery scheduled right away since a large quantity of hay will be coming from out of state, and to make sure we can have a continuous supply available. We estimate the hay we have now will last about 4 more weeks before it’s gone and this is why the situation is dire.
