My name is C Anine (name changed for safety reasons); I am a queer, disabled migrant who lives in Glasgow, Scotland. I am fundraising to buy a dog who will be my companion and help me with my mental health.
Until recently, I had an adopted dog called B*. Unfortunately, the charity I adopted her from decided to take her away from me in a quite unfair and discriminatory way. B* was really important for my mental health because I live alone with C-PTSD. She helped me stick to a routine and keep me going when I've had periods of suicidality - especially through winter. I'm dealing with a recent series of traumatic events, so I'm worried about what that might mean for me now that I'm living properly alone going into winter. I've also been recommended to have a therapy animal by professionals in the past.
It is important for me to have an animal companion so I've been looking into my options after my previous dog was taken away.
I would adopt again but charities can make you jump through hoops and surveille you to decide if you are "desirable" or not - this impacts me negatively, not only for mental health reasons but also due to the discrimination I face as a queer, disabled migrant. I cannot go through this process again.
For these reasons, I have decided to raise funds to purchase a dog. I need help to do this while I wait for my benefits payments to come in, and I have already had to cut the number of therapy sessions I have for financial reasons.
Any money you can give would be very appreciated.
This crowdfunder is being run with the support of Mutual Aid Trans Edinburgh. UPDATE 23/10/2021: as Mutual Aid Trans Edinburgh is on hiatus, this fundraiser is now being run independently from MATE at this time.
