As some in our communities may already know, our son/brother/father/nephew/cousin/friend Stephen Koski has been hospitalized for the past 8 weeks, most of which was spent in the ICU, recovering from a life-threatening internal infection. He was initially hospitalized in July with a small intestine blockage. Unfortunately, there were post-surgical complications that required a series of more surgeries/procedures to control the spread of infection. His most recent surgery required a thoracentesis to drain his lung of infection. Even with this last procedure, Stephen requires oxygen to aide his breathing.
Stephen was transferred last week from St. John's Hospital in St Paul, MN to Bethesda Long Term Care Hospital which specializes in treating patients with complex needs. His expected stay there, we are told, could be anywhere from 6-8 weeks depending on the progress he makes.
Due to the seriousness and length of Stephen's illness his employer could not hold his position for him. He had been employed for many years as a Private Care Nurse to special needs children - a job he loved and took great pride in. At this point, it is looking like he may be unable to return to work. Come September 30th, 2019, Stephen's private insurance plan will lapse. Due to the length of this hospitalization, significant medical debt has accrued.
Stephan is stoic, determined, tenacious, and brave. These characteristics are also described in the Finnish concept of "Sisu." Alone, Stephen could persevere but with your support we can help him put his life back together sooner than later. Prayers are requested for his physical healing along with a monetary contribution to help with his medical debt. Whatever you can share is appreciated.
