பெயருக்கு ஏற்றமாதிரியே தென்னை, மா, முந்திரி என பலவகை மரங்களை கொண்ட இயற்கை எழில் கொஞ்சும் கிராமம் எங்கள் ஊர். இதே போன்று மற்ற இரண்டு கிராமங்களை (பெரியகுத்தகை, நாலுவேதபதி) உள்ளடக்கிய மூன்று பக்கம் உப்பங்கழி (backwater) யாலும் , ஒரு புறம் கடலாலும் சூழ்ந்த தீவு போன்ற பகுதிதான் நாங்கள் வாழும் ஊர். இங்கு சுமார் 10,000 குடும்பங்கள் உள்ளன.
தேங்காய் மாங்காய் தான் பிள்ளைகளின் கல்வியிலிருந்து மக்களின் அனைத்து தேவைகளுக்கும் வாழ்வாதரமாக விளங்கியது.
கஜா புயல் (cyclone gaja) கடந்த நவம்பர் 16 ஆம் தேதி எங்கள் ஊரில் சுமார் 110 KM வேகத்தில் கரையை கடந்து எங்கள் வாழ்க்கையே புரட்டி போட்டுவிட்டு சென்றுவிட்டது. உயிர்ச்சேதம் இல்லை, ஆனால் எங்கள் வாழ்வாதாரம் மொத்தமும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த புயலால் 90% மரங்கள் அனைத்தும் வேரோடு சாய்ந்தும், முறிந்தும் போயின. ஆடு, மாடு, வீடு என அனைத்தும் சேதமடைந்து அன்றாட தேவைகளுக்கே அல்லாடப்படுகிறார்கள் எங்கள் மக்கள்.
தலைமுறைகண்ட மரங்களை மீண்டும் வளர்க்க குறைந்தது 20 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகும். அரசால் வழங்கப்படும் நிவாரணம் ஒரு மரம் வளர்க்ககூட பற்றாது.
நாம் அனைவரும் இணைந்தால், பாதிக்கபட்ட மக்களுக்கு கை கொடுத்தால் ஓரளவு அவர்களால் மீண்டு வரமுடியும். நாம் அனைவரும் சேர்ந்து பங்களிக்கும் தொகையினில் தென்னை, மா, முந்திரி மற்றும் பல மர கன்றுகளை வழங்கிடலாம். பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையில் சிறு நம்பிக்கை விதைத்திடலாம்.

Pushpavanam, my hometown,is widely known for its natural sceneries. Trees of many varieties including that of Mango,Coconut,Cashew.etc.enrich its landscape.Along With Periyakuthakai and Naluvethapathi, it is surrounded by the sea, Bay of Bengal, on the one side and backwaters emanated from the sea on the other three sides.Roughly Ten Thousands(10,000) families are living here.The produce from the trees are the sole source of income for the majority of the families.Right from educational expenses of the children to other family related expenses the entire village depends on this income.
Gaja, the cyclone, that wreaked havoc on east coast of India last week did not spare our village too.The effect of high wind speed measuring 110 km per hour not only resulted in uprooted trees on its way,our life too have become topsy-turvy.
One cannot take solace from the fact that the loss of life is relatively small given the cyclone's severity, since the damage inflicted upon our homes,farms, livestock are in gargantuan proportions.
It will take minimum 20 more years for us to restore the landscape to its original form that was there before cyclone Gaja's arrival .The relief package given by Government can only be described as pittance given the enormity of the damage.
If we come together and decide to help these people, it will go a long way in finding a way out of the misery they currently find themselves in.
The amount collected from our contribution can be utilised to buy and gift these people saplings of various crops that were mentioned earlier.
