My name is Sam Keele. I am Admin for the Jane Austen Fan Club on Facebook. The Jane Austen Fan Club started in 2006 and has grown to 20,000 members. We are a flourishing Jane Austen online community.
I have started this campaign in the name of our esteemed group, to buy the Jane Austen Letter from the Dodge family. This will be done in an auction on October 23rd.
I have been guided by two very smart ladies, Caroline Jane Knight and Kathryn Sullivan who is a Trustee of the Jane Austen's House Museum. Because of this guidance, I feel our chances of success have been enhanced.
If we are unable to secure this Letter with the funds raised, within 12 months the Jane Austen Fan Club will use the funds to purchase an alternative Austen related artefact for preservation at Jane Austen’s House Museum. The choice of alternative artefact, if required, will be made by representatives of the Jane Austen Fan Club in consultation with Jane Austen’s House Museum and will be published on the Jane Austen Fan Club Facebook page.
This letter is no ordinary letter! It was written to the Cottage in which the Museum now resides. It contains the story of Jane Austen going to Wedgwood with Edward Knight to order the family crested dinner service that Caroline 's parents now own (some of which is on display at JAHM), so it would be magical to have this letter in Chawton.
This campaign is not just about saving this Letter for the nation but for Austen lovers wherever we may be in the world: we all of us have cultural and emotional investment in them and a right to share them. I believe this passionately! If this Letter goes into private hands, it is lost to us, possibly forever.
So, this campaign is our Amazing Coup! We will snatch The Letter up and place it in the Jane Austen's House Museum, where it can be enjoyed by the many thousands of Janeites who visit that place every year. We must become the Tip of the Spear. For less than $10 each, our little community could save the letter and donate it to JAHM, where it would be a permanent witness to our generosity and strength and leave a fantastic legacy!
