My name is Betty Keating, and I’d like to introduce you to Bryan, a wonderful 23 year old suffering from muscular dystrophy (MD). I met Bryan when I was a pediatric nurse practitioner at Bellevue and we remained friends after my retirement. I have supported Bryan in many ways, but he now needs help from a larger community.
Bryan requires full-time care for all of his needs. He is wheelchair -bound and he uses special breathing equipment 24 hours a day. It is difficult for him to speak, but he communicates primarily via text and email. Bryan attends community college, where he excels in his work towards an associate degree in graphic design. He works part time using his design skills to contribute to his family. Both parents have devoted their lives to, Bryan’s care, while working at low- paying factory and restaurant jobs.
Bryan’s family lives in Elmhurst, Queens in a poorly maintained building where the elevators are frequently out of order. When that happens, Bryan can’t go out or attend classes. When his parents transport Bryan anywhere, they need a handicapped Uber, prohibitively expensive for a family of limited means.
Bryan’s parents want to move to a NJ suburb, where Bryan would enjoy healthier surroundings and live close to extended family. They envision Bryan being able to share time with family and friends, visit parks and restaurants, and spend time outdoors with his service dog, King. To realize this dream, Bryan’s family needs to purchase a special van equipped to accommodate his electric wheelchair.
I will donate several thousand dollars but even a used van with greater then 75K miles will likely cost about $26,000. Any amount you can contribute will be most appreciated and help us reach our goal.
Also, if anyone has experience or contacts in purchasing this kind of vehicle, any advice would be most appreciated! Together, we will make a profound difference in this deserving young man’s life. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. And please forward this to anyone you might think would be interested in helping with this cause.
