Help Us Save Lives: Equipping Vehicles with Life-Saving Defibrillators

My name is Darren Meynell, and I’m raising funds to equip my private hire vehicles with defibrillators—also known as AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). These essential devices are designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, dramatically improving their chances of survival when used quickly.

Why This Matters to Me?

On November 6, 2024, my twin brother, Dean, experienced a life-changing event. After completing a routine 5k run at a gym in Worcestershire, he began feeling chest pains. Thankfully, his partner, Karen, urged him to get it checked.

While reporting his symptoms to gym staff, Dean collapsed in the reception area—it was believed he had suffered his first heart attack.

Fortunately an off-duty paramedic by the name of Ben Lawrence happened to be on-site. Ben immediately recognised the severity of the situation. He provided emergency care, administered aspirin, and called for an ambulance. Dean’s pain initially subsided, but the situation took a terrifying turn in the ambulance when he went into cardiac arrest. His heart stopped beating.

Paramedics worked tirelessly, performing CPR for 40 minutes and using a defibrillator multiple times to revive him. Later, at Worcester Royal Hospital, Dean experienced another cardiac arrest and again required defibrillation.

Thanks to the quick actions of Ben and the medical team, my brother survived. He is now recovering at home, but the experience left a profound mark on us all.

Why We Need Defibrillators?

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. The chances of survival decrease by 10% for every minute without defibrillation. Immediate access to an AED is often the difference between life and death.

The incident with my brother opened my eyes to the critical role of CPR and defibrillators in saving lives. Inspired by this, I’ve been actively promoting CPR awareness in my community, sharing training resources, and encouraging preparedness.

Why I’m Taking Action?

As the owner of an Executive Private Hire business, I spend a significant amount of time on the road, travelling over 80,000 miles annually and serving a wide range of clients. By equipping my vehicles with defibrillators, I can bring this life-saving capability to the broader community, ensuring that help is never too far away in an emergency.

However, AEDs are expensive—costing around £1,200 each, with additional maintenance costs. For a small business like mine, this is a significant financial burden.
