Help Freya Get a Racing Wheelchair to Pursue Her Athletic Dreams

On January 1st, 2024, life changed overnight for 13-year-old Freya. Once a vibrant gymnast and national-level cheerleader, she woke up unable to move from the waist down. After being rushed to Bedford Hospital and later transferred to Addenbrooke’s, Freya was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis (TM)—a rare neurological condition that causes inflammation of the spinal cord. In Freya’s case, it left her suddenly and unexpectedly paralysed.

Through months of intense treatment and sheer determination, Freya has made remarkable progress. She has regained most movement in her left leg and some in her right thigh. After further rehabilitation at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, she returned home with a new outlook but the same fierce love for sport.

Freya hasn’t let her condition hold her back. She has performed with her cheer squad Elements Elite at the Bedford River Festival, completed her level 1 and 2 Junior coaching course and is now coaching Storm Surge mini novice team and Strike Force mini prep.

She has also joined Aces Wheelchair Basketball in Stoke Mandeville, and recently discovered a new passion: wheelchair racing at Bedford Athletic Stadium.

Right now, Freya is using a borrowed, entry-level racing chair—but to truly thrive and compete, she needs a lightweight, properly fitted racing wheelchair. These specialised chairs are expensive, but they can make all the difference in helping her reach her full potential on the track.
