Hi, my name is Gem & I’m asking for help to fund a new mobility scooter. I have Epidermolysis Bullosa with Muscular Dystrophy, Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome, a Tracheostomy & Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure. In the past couple of years I’ve noticed my muscle strength deteriorate. I believe that now is the time to purchase a scooter with more support, i.e a seat with a higher back to support my fatigued neck muscles. I really enjoy being out in nature & attending festivals so I’ve been looking into scooters with 18” wheels - to avoid getting stuck in the mud, being able to safely navigate over tree branches etc. A year ago I hit a hidden tree root while exiting a park with my partner & his 10 y/o. It caused my front wheels to twist & send my scooter toppling sideways. I hit my head on a concrete path & had to go to the hospital. Understandably, this has now made me far more cautious of my surroundings. I will be transparent with you in regards to my financial situation - Due to my medical issues I am unable to work. I do receive PIP & UC but most of this goes on bills, food, diesel etc. If I’m able to then I will try to make a small contribution myself, but obviously it’ll be nowhere near the £5,000-£7,000 mark. I have looked into charity support grants but the maximum they offer is £1,000. I have a car on the Motability Scheme which I would be unable to give up/trade in for a scooter as I need it for daily living, including for hospital appointments 1.5-2 hours away from home. I have thought of & considered every option before reaching out for help. I know it’s a big ask but honestly, anything you’re able to spare would mean a lot to me & be very much appreciated.
