In memory of Graham Lumsdon the Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Dolphin Watch Group and the folk of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea are fundraising to erect a new bench with table at Church Point, Newbiggin, with any additional money being donated to the Newbiggin RNLI. We thought a bench with table in a place Graham loved would be the perfect way to remember him.

An active member of the Dolphin Watch, Graham was a huge character in Newbiggin who could be found on Church Point most days spotting and reporting on dolphins. Graham was a true gentleman and always had a spare pair of binoculars and wise words for anyone who wanted to learn about dolphins and other creatures which frequented the shoreline. An active astronomer with an amazing telescope, by night Graham could often be found on the Point with a crowd of enthusiastic stargazers. On occasions, he’d take his sleeping bag out and would take up an entire bench in the early hours when few were around to observe the meteor showers and take in the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

In addition to this, Graham was a qualified and active Marine Mammal Medic with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), responsible for responding to assist seals, stranded dolphins and other marine life. Sometimes just guarding them from inquisitive dogs, other times having to rescue them and take them to the nearest vet due to their injuries.
