Youkhim needs assistance – let us join together to help
My name is Bryan Humphrey, returned AVI Volunteer to Cambodia, 2013-2015. I have returned to Cambodia evaluating programs for an Australian NGO and working voluntarily for Cambodian NGO’s. I returned from Cambodia on 23rd February 2017.
I am interested in helping the family of one of AVI Cambodia’s favourite sons: Youkhim. As many of you will be aware AVI no longer has the contract for the AVID program in Cambodia. Youkhim finished his full time employment with AVI at the end of December 2016. He is now seeking work while receiving some casual work from AVI.
Youkhim will have a difficult time finding work in Cambodia; he is 50 years old, disabled and without a university degree. A triple barrier in this country.
Youkhim provides support for his son and daughter, his mother and his grandmother. There is not great support from his extended family because of their income levels.
I talked to Youkhim about what support would assist him and his family. Youkhim was clear that support for his daughter, Punita to finish her education was where any external support would be most valued by his family. Punita is in year 10 at school and wants to go to university to study journalism. Many of us have met Youkhim’s family and will have had fond memories of watching his children grow up. Punita is a very bright and vivacious 15 year old. Youkhim’s son is now in second year of university and has a job so he is largely self supporting.
To give an idea of the potential costs, Youkhim has prepared a realistic estimate for the cost of allowing Punita to finish high school with English tuition, and university. Over the nearly six years, the estimate is close to $US6,000. Our aim is to have sufficient funds for Punita to at least finish high school, take her extra language classes and finish her first year at university.
I am seeking donations from past AVI volunteers whose lives have been touched by Youkhim’s support and kindness. Our AVI experience changed our lives. We have the opportunity to repay that experience and the part played by Youkhim.
If you would like to donate to support Punita’s education you can donate through this gofundme site. Donations will be forwarded to Youkhim's bank account at the end of this short campaign.
Young women like Punita are the future of Cambodia. Let us join together and make sure she reaches her potential
