An act of kindness turned into a heavy financial burden I can’t carry alone. Trying to stay afloat as a student after unexpected impound fees.

Summary:

I tried to help a friend in need by helping with their vehicle purchase under their responsibility. Despite my careful actions, the vehicle was later left uninsured, towed, and sold under a lien. I was then left with unexpected fees after our agreement was breached. All funds will go towards covering the charges associated.

Trying to help a friend in hardship has turned into one of the most damaging experiences of my life; financially, mentally, and emotionally. What began as an act of kindness and support has left me carrying the full consequences of someone else’s irresponsibility. As a student already living on a tight budget, being hit with unexpected impound and storage fees has caused severe financial strain. The stress and constant blame have made this experience incredibly hard on my mental well-being.

I stepped in to support someone I trusted, only to be left with responsibilities and debt that were never supposed to be mine. I supported a friend going through difficult times in finding a vehicle that met their needs after they asked for my help.

Because of temporary logistical issues on their end, the vehicle had to be placed in my name for a short period. I agreed to this out of kindness, with the understanding that the vehicle would be transferred over to them as soon as possible, no later than three months. I never benefited from the vehicle and never wanted it connected to my name. From the beginning, it was understood that all responsibilities for the vehicle—its use, care, storage, and upkeep—were entirely theirs.

Three months later, I had to leave for remote work, which had been known by all involved, and knew I’d have limited service. Before leaving, I handed over the keys and prepared all the transfer papers in advance, ensuring the simplest possible transfer. Unfortunately, the transfer wasn’t completed as agreed. Later, the insurance was allowed to lapse, and the truck was left parked without coverage on a public road.

I came home to the vehicle in storage at the impound lot after being towed and a mess of questions, fees and threats. Instead of addressing the situation, the person who was supposed to take responsibility left it unresolved while fees continued to accumulate. The vehicle has since been sold under a lien, but the remaining charges are still attached to my name: fees that could affect me financially for years if I can’t pay them off.

This is without mentioning the harm that has been caused by this situation to other people I love who were involved throughout this challenging time.

Along with this charge, I’m also facing hard times funding legal services, looking after personal vehicle issues and supporting myself as a student.

This situation has left me dealing with recurring panic attacks, overwhelming anxiety, and financial strain I never expected. I tried to help someone I trusted, and instead I’ve been left with fees and emotional damage that I’m struggling to cope with.
