Puncheons @ Willow Lake Park, Queens, NY
Hello, my name is Christopher Guthrie and I am a Life Scout from Troop 116, located in Valley Stream.
My Eagle Project will consist of constructing Puncheons along a muddy trail around Willow Lake in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, New York- one of the last freshwater wetlands in New York City. This project will also include removing stone pavers, picking up garbage, and clearing excess vegetation.
A Puncheon is a walkway 8 feet in length whose purpose is to give pedestrians a clear path to walk on whilst avoiding mud, dirt, and stagnant water. It also allows for the soil underneath and around the path to become more fertile and allow new growth, consequently preserving the natural environment of the lake.
I am doing this project to benefit the environment in the community of Queens, New York. Flushing Meadows park is a place with a lot of history, such as hosting 2 World's Fairs, and the yearly US Open Tennis Championship. Willow Lake, on the other hand, is a designated natural refuge. My intention is to preserve the natural environment of the lake and allow New Yorkers to enjoy it and its surroundings for many years to come. Thank you for your support!
