On January 11, 2021 Agent Luis X. Salaman-Conde, Carolina Municipal Police Department responded to a vehicle crash on Avenida Roberto Clemente. One of the drivers involved in the crash opened fire on him with an AK-47 rifle, killing him. The man then carjacked another vehicle and fled onto the Baldorioty de Castro Expressway. Officers from the Carolina Municipal Police Department and Puerto Rico Police Department pursued the vehicle until it stopped near the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. The subject opened fire again, fatally wounding Agent Luis Marrero-Diaz, Puerto Rico Police Department. As he attempted to flee in the car a second time he fatally struck Agent Eliezer Hernandez-Cartagena, Carolina Municipal Police Department. He was able to flee into a nearby residential area where he remained at large. He was found fatally shot by unknown assailant(s) on January 12th with a cardboard sign on his chest declaring him responsible for the officers' deaths.
The NYPD Hispanic Society in partnership with Mrs. Maritza Ramos of the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation (follow: IG @det_ramosfndn) will be traveling to Puerto Rico in early March to visit the fallen families of the above mentioned officers. The average base salary for a Puerto Rico Police Officer is 33k. Due to ongoing economic struggles on the island, officers salaries are non-guaranteed.  We would like to pay respect and honor our fallen brothers in a sign of unity by providing monetary support to the spouses, children and immediate family members gravely impacted by the loss of these heroes. In addition; the NYPD Hispanic Society and Blue Lives Matter have created a memorial tee shirt which can be purchased for $20 @ bluelivesmatternyc.org
