My name is Nia Clark, and I am a journalist, a mother, and a wife. I have spent my career working in TV news, the majority of it as an on-air reporter. I have also spent years researching, writing, reporting on, and podcasting about the many massacres of African American communities in the United States. I produced a podcast called Dreams of Black Wall Street, which has garnered more than half a million downloads and streams and chronicles a number of these atrocities.
I have also spent the last several years writing a book about these atrocities while raising two babies who are now toddlers and working as a TV reporter. This project has meant a lot to me, but I need your help to get me across the finish line and get this book published.
In recent years, many people have become aware of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre that destroyed Black Wall Street and Tulsa, Oklahoma's Greenwood district. What most people do not know is that more than 130 similar incidents occurred throughout the nation's history, beginning in the antebellum period, though most occurred after it. After Emancipation in 1865, many free African Americans built self-sustaining, majority-Black communities that served as sanctuaries from the brutality they were often subjected to outside of those communities. These sanctuaries became powerful symbols of Black progress and, as such, were targeted in brutal racially motivated massacres that devastated and destroyed many of these settlements, towns, and cities.
Raising awareness about these atrocities became part of my mission when I realized that much of this history had been deliberately suppressed, which has caused great harm. I am almost at the finish line with the book, but I need help covering the professional support it takes to get the book ready for publication.
Because this is a non-fiction history book, accuracy is paramount. The funds I raise will go toward a researcher, a copy editor, and a proofreader so the book can be carefully reviewed and prepared the right way.
Right now, my family is balancing private school tuition for my children along with many other daily expenses. If I try to save up the publishing costs on my own, it would take at least a few more years before this book could be published. Support from others would give me the chance to move forward now instead of waiting that much longer after already putting years into writing it.
If you care about this history like I do, I would really appreciate it if you would donate to my fundraising campaign so that my dream of having this book published can become a reality. No amount is too little, and every bit of support helps. If you are able to give or share this fundraiser, I would be deeply grateful for your support. Thank you.
