Public Works Maintenance Worker Seriously Injured
Donation protected
Nick Caffrey, a Public Works Maintenance Worker for the City of Redmond, WA, was seriously injured on Thursday, September 8, 2022, when a driver struck him while jet-rodding the sewer system. The impact pinned him between the vehicle and the back of the maintenance truck, causing severe injury to both legs and possible internal organ damage.
As of this writing, both legs were crushed from his hips to his toes. He was rushed to Harbor View Hospital, where he was immediately treated for internal bleeding. His condition is currently stable. However, it is unclear whether he will be able to walk or work again.
Before joining the City of Redmond, Nick worked for the Northshore School District for 25 years. In this capacity, he maintained school grounds and playgrounds to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the children.
Nick's wife, Carrie, is a former Public Works Maintenance Worker / AFSCME Union President for the City of Bothell. She currently serves as an AFSCME Council 2 Staff Representative. Many City of Bothell Public Works staff developed friendships with Nick as a result of their working relationship and personal friendship with Carrie.
Public Works Maintenance Workers are the unsung heroes of public service. They often work in dangerous and harsh conditions to ensure consistently clean water, flushing toilets, and smooth roads. Many people are unaware of the labor involved in making normal happen. Tales of their heroism in the movies and news are non-existent. Nevertheless, they carry on, with integrity, every day.
In a show of solidarity, the Public Works staff at Redmond and Bothell started this GoFundMe campaign to assist Nick and Carrie in his recovery. Money raised will go toward medical bills, anticipated lost wages, and home improvements to accommodate his disability.
Please donate whatever you can to help Nick and Carrie during this time of need.
