Public Health Opportunity in Mexico

Hi! My name is Maylin Isabella and I'm a 3rd year student at UC Berkeley. I am pursuing a B.S. in Nutrition, Physiology, and Metabolism. My plans after undergrad are to attend nursing school and ultimately become a Certified Nurse Midwife.

I was fortunate enough to be selected for the 2022 summer program "Global Health in Mexico" in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. Through this program, I will have the opportunity to intern at a Women's Health clinic and receive first-hand experience in obstetrics and gynecology, which is directly correlated to my future career goals. In addition to my internship, I will be enrolled in a "Spanish for Health" course that will help me expand my knowledge of medical terminology and better communicate with the communities I will be serving this summer and throughout my future career as a nurse. Through this experience, I hope to reconnect with my Oaxacan roots by serving local communities and getting a better sense of what healthcare looks like in other countries while forming a genuine connection with the women and children I will provide care for in the clinic.

Although I am ecstatic about this opportunity, I am experiencing financial limitations in paying for program costs such as registration fees, flight and travel expenses, and living arrangements. I currently am working two jobs while being a full-time student and have been saving up as much as possible. However, I am still unable to meet the financial requirements in order to participate in the program. Any financial contributions would be greatly appreciated in order for me to have this amazing experience that will ultimately take me one step closer to my educational and professional goals.
