You have heard about, read about and viewed images of the Syrian refugee crisis. You, like me, likely have wanted to help but do not know how. Families are in need, and we believe that Canadians like us can meet their needs.
As of October 6, a group of like-minded Edmontonians met with the purpose of acting. Calling ourselves “Bayt al’Amal” (House of Hope), we are working to bring a refugee family from the Middle East to Edmonton. We are linked by a deep desire to be directly helpful. Some members are returning after successfully sponsoring Guatemalan refugees decades ago.
We are confident that we can navigate the time-consuming and complicated process of sponsoring a refugee family. However, nothing can happen until funds are in place. Sponsoring a family of four for a year will cost about $35,000 - $40,000. The process of applying privately is challenging so Bayt Al’Amal is working with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese through St. Joseph’s College . They are primed for action and are supporting us so we can get things started once we have collected a minimum of $15,000. We will eventually, however, need the full amount.
Here’s the good news:
1. Donations through this GoFundMe page of $50 or more are tax-deductible for you.
2. The federal government will match donations for refugees, dollar-for-dollar until December 31. For every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities between September 12 and December 31 in response to the conflict in Syria, the government will set aside one dollar in the Syria Emergency Relief Fund. The total value of the Fund will be capped at $100 million.
So a donation made is a donation doubled.
I hope and trust that you can contribute to this worthy cause. Your donation will make a huge difference to one family directly and, through the matching funds, other families indirectly. We will help the family settle in appropriate accommodations, get schooling, health care, get work and integrate into the community.
