International Women's Day as we tend to recognize it today was established in 1987 when the National Women's History Alliance successfully petitioned for a presidential proclamation drawing attention to and improving the focus on women in historical studies. IWD falls on March 8th because women workers specifically in New York City have led historic protests on this date in both 1957 and 1908. I know this reads like AI wrote it but I researched it and wrote it myself.
