What is PSEUDO?

PSEUDO is a psychological thriller about a woman named Kate who suffers a tragic accident rendering her into an amnesic state of mind, and her relationship with James, a doting and kind man who borders on the obsessive. Throughout the film, it becomes clear that something doesn't quite add up, and Kate must truly figure out what her reality really is, in spite of James.

PSEUDO is dedicated to telling a story as a letter to the sudden feeling of horror when you no longer know who you've committed into a relationship with, a sudden drop in realization that the person who you've spent time with, who's seen your life has actually ended up a complete stranger in the end. What then? Were you even the same person as who you started? Were they ever who they claimed to be? At Grand Street Film Company, we want to tell this story in the dark light that it deserves, with proper equipment, acting, and high quality cameras.

What is Grand Street Film Company?

"It takes a village to make a movie"

Grand Street Film Company as a whole is dedicated to generating work for an already tentative film industry. When you donate for a single film project, you’re giving a chance to aspiring, vetted creatives with the chance to tell stories that are meant to come on screen. We hope to eventually sponsor ever increasing new creatives, new crew, and undiscovered talent to give them the stage and light they truly deserve.

From the food that we'll spend money on, to the 12 hour work shifts of our crew members who'll be on set to achieve this best possible product, any donation will always be appreciated!

Director's statement:

I have stated many times throughout my life that ‘the entertainment industry’ was my alternate life path, without seriously thinking I would one day pursue this course. Fear held me back - the fear of failure, fear of success, fear of change, of uncertainty, of ridicule, rejection, the list goes on. One day my old life became untenable in its current state and a feeling came about that I must face my fears or die - I have a flair for drama, what can I say? I fell in love with filmmaking. I felt lost and now I’m found. Seriously.

The core filmmaking crew that has formed around this project started with a few aspiring actors coming together to enter the ‘48 hour film project’ and finding out there was a limitless sky of creative contributions like producing, screenwriting, storyboarding, lighting, sound, you get the gist. We kept imagining. Our screenwriter, Jimmy Xie, had an idea - A woman with amnesia whose boyfriend isn’t who he says he is - and we grew that idea into Pseudo. Our crew has continued to grow around this project into a community of artists who are pouring their individual soulwork into the making of this film. A village passion project.

The opportunity arose for me to take on the role of director (for the first time!), and as I explore this new part of myself I am savoring the joy I have found in visual storytelling. What speaks to me about the story is I, too, like our protagonist, have found myself in relationships that felt off, unsafe, or toxic but on the surface gave me status or stability and I had to choose whether to stay or brave the unknown. As I write this statement, I am becoming aware of the metaphor Pseudo serves to my own story, of finding the courage to chart a path in filmmaking and in doing so get closer to realizing my true self.

Our Inspirations

For PSUEDO specifically, we have several projects that we want to capture the mood on, as of now our main sources of inspiration are:

  • Barbarian [2019] [Specifically the beginning scenes]
  • Cloverfield Lane
  • Twin Peaks

Our main sources of story telling will revolve around dark themes, and playing with an amnesic form of thinking, we'll be able to create an interesting visual design of Kate in comparison to the sharp and ever present James.
