PSC Walk - Mornington Peninsula, VIC
About PSC
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a progressive autoimmune liver disease that causes inflammation and scarring within the bile ducts of the liver. This inflammation and scarring restricts normal bile flow through the liver into the small intestine where it is used to break down fats in food. PSC is strongly linked to IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Up to two-thirds of patients diagnosed with PSC will also have an IBD diagnosis such as Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s disease.
PSC has no current cure or treatment that has been proven to slow down the progression of disease and liver damage. As a result some patients require a liver transplant.
PSC is considered a rare disease. Consequently, there has not been a whole lot of data collected on PSC in general. In a 2012 Australian study on PSC population, it was found there was only 872
reported cases of people with a PSC diagnosis in Australia. It is for this reason that we aim to raise awareness and funds to help support PSC patients in Australia.
