Help PS 176 Win in Wisconsin!

Donation protected
I am thrilled to announce that PS 176 The Cambria Heights School has won 1st Place in NY State in all FOUR components at the New York State Future Problem Solver State Bowl and 22 students have been invited to participate at the International Future Problem Solving Competition in June at The University of Wisconsin. The students will represent New York State and compete against teams from 50 states and 14 countries from around the world. This is a not only a win for the students, this is a win for PS 176Q, a win for District 29, and a win for the New York City Public School System!

This is PS176’s second year participating in the Future Problem Solver Program International (FPSPI).  The Future Problem Solving Program was founded in 1974 by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance. FPSPI stimulates critical and creative thinking skills, encourages students to develop a vision for the future, and prepares students for leadership roles. FPSPI engages students in creative problem solving within the curriculum and provides competitive opportunities.  FPSPI involves thousands of students annually from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States.

This year we participated in all four components of the competition. We had 8 teams participate in the Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) portion of the competition, in which teams use the six-step creative problem solving process to solve a future problem. All 8 GIPS teams participated in the Presentation of Action Plan component, in which they create a skit to act out their action plan of how they have chosen to solve the problem.

We had 1 team compete in the Community Problem Solving portion of the competition, in which 15 students worked together to use the six-step problem solving process to solve a real-world problem in the community. The students have been working all school year to improve the flow of traffic and create safer conditions on 235th Street in front of PS176. We also had 31 students participate in the Scenario Writing portion of the competition, in which the students each wrote a 1,500-word scenario that takes place in the future relating to one of the GIPS topics, Educational Disparities, 3D Printing, Genetic Modification and Identity Theft.

The students competed at the 2017 Future Problem Solver New York State Bowl on Sunday March 12th 2017.  Here are the results:

 Global Issues Problem Solving Competition:
           1st Place – The Smarties
3rd Place – The Girls of the Future

Action Plan Skit Competition:
           1st Place – The Futuristics

Community Problem Solver Competition:
1st Place NY State – Community Now

Scenario Writing Competition:
         1st place NY State
        3rd place NY State
        Honorable Mention

There is a large cost associated with sending the students to Wisconsin to compete in the 5-day competition. The cost is roughly $1,000 per person, which includes airfare, room and board and registration fees. We are hoping to be able to send the 22 students, 2 teacher chaperones and 6 parent chaperones. We are hoping to raise $30,000 by May 1st to be able to fully fund their trip and allow them to participate in this amazing opportunity.

We are reaching out to private and public organizations throughout our community and city for support. Any monetary contributions will go a long way toward reaching our goal. Additionally, any publicity support to spread the word about our cause will also go a long way towards reaching our goal.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,
Mark Coccarelli
