Provisions for those in Direct Provision
Donation protected
People are experiencing personal hardships over the last year but if you spare a moment to read and support, it would be utterly appreciated.
My friend Rebecca Lynch and I are running a half marathon next month to raise funds and awareness for mothers and their children in Direct Provision in the Kinsale Roundabout DP centre. To live in Direct Provision is something that is thankfully alien to us. Equally as alien to us is to comprehend what it must be like to try to clothe, clean, medicate and educate a child on 9 euro a week. Adults in direct provision receive just over 38 euro a week and with this, mothers in DP use this to try to sustain and nourish their family and their home.
A home cooked meal is something that we absent-mindedly enjoy at least three times a day. It is an unconscious part of our day to day and for many foreign nationals who live in this country, a taste of home. Sadly this is not the case for every family in Ireland. An average of 10% of income is spent on grocery shopping. This means people in DP have an allowance of just over 15 euro a month for food. Any funds that you can donate, we will convert into a shopping voucher for Dunnes, Supervalu and Pennys so they can purchase provisions and essentials for themselves. It is more than a donation, it is giving someone dignity.
The mothers in the DP centre have organised a team to work together to try to equally divide any donations that they do receive and have this small message to say to those who can donate. “Thank you so much for your generosity and support in these hard times for us all. We are so grateful to live in a country as Ireland. The people make it so welcoming and warming for us. With your support we can somehow feel a bit better. Your help today can inspire someone to help tomorrow.”
