My name is Rosie and I’m currently 17 years old studying education in sixth form.
On July 22nd I am going to Kenya for 3 weeks to stay with a family and gain experience and knowledge through helping in a school. I will also be learning and embracing Kenyan traditions and culture through social projects in a small village.
During this time I will help in a local primary school and I aim to provide some equipment and daily essentials for the school/children. I have always felt passionately about arts, crafts and sport. I feel it is important that children are given the same opportunities and freedom to express their creative strengths through extra curriculum activities. Any funding I receive will be split into either projects I will be supporting or buying blow up footballs, netballs, skipping ropes and other basic sport equipment. The funding will also go towards school shoes, re-usable nappies and basic clothing.
From this experience I hope to see the different style and type of teaching, in particular the curriculum and classroom set up. I believe this will help me when I become a teacher myself as I will have a range of experience and a better understanding of the Kenyan culture. I also think it will help open my eyes to the uniqueness of how education is taught and valued in Kenya.
