We are a group of residents from Imperial, CA, working together to stop the construction of a massive 330 MW Data Center and a large battery energy storage system (BESS) right next to our homes, schools, and the Kinder Morgan fuel silos. The County of Imperial approved this project without notifying the community or conducting a CEQA review, and many of us only learned about it through a Facebook post by the City of Imperial. The project includes a 950,000 sq. ft. facility, 132 natural gas standby generators, and a 330 MW substation connected to the local power utility.
We are deeply concerned about the impact this project will have on our power grid, water usage, air and noise pollution, and the safety of our neighborhoods. The BESS facility, which uses lithium-based batteries, poses a significant fire hazard—if a fire were to occur, it could burn for days or weeks, releasing toxic particles into the air and affecting homes, crop fields, irrigation canals, and schools. The site is also dangerously close—within 800 feet—to a Kinder Morgan Fuels Storage facility, increasing the risk to our community.
Despite these risks, the County has already approved a grading permit for the project under a Notice of Exemption (NOE), bypassing the usual environmental review process. We have been funding all outreach ourselves, including flyers, printing, materials, meetings, and research. Now, we need your help to continue organizing, raise awareness, and, if necessary, seek legal guidance. Your support will help us cover essential outreach supplies, prepare community materials, attend meetings, and consult attorneys or advocates if legal action becomes necessary. Every contribution strengthens our united effort to protect our families and demand responsible development in the Imperial Valley. Thank you for standing with us.
Protegiendo Nuestros Vecindarios — Defendiendo Nuestro Valle
