I am diagnosed with Alport Syndrome, Q87.8. I'm told by a high risk pregnancy nephrologist my kidney's would more than likely fail after giving birth. There is also a 50% chance with every child they will inherit Alport Syndrome.
Between IVF, PGD, PGS, lawyer fees, surrogate, their medical fees and lost wages it will be over 100,000 dollars to have a child even before they're born!!
This is a devastating disease for both males and females. Both genders can transition to end stage renal disease. This means they will need to go on dialysis and be put on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. If I carry a child I will be become ill and could potentially die, this will have a grave effect on my husband and new child. In lieu of having a natural pregnancy, I want to prevent my child from inheriting the disease as well as protect myself through IVF, PGS, PGD and gestational surrogacy.
