UPDATE 10/10/2025: Great news! On September 2, 2025, the NC Superior Court issued its decision, and we won!!!! The Court reversed SAGA's special use permit!

Unfortunately, that isn't the end of the story. Last week, SAGA appealed the decision to the NC Court of Appeals, so the litigaton continues. As a result, WPOA is again soliciting donations to help us fund the litigation costs, which are estimated to be $25,000. To that end, we have increased our initial fundraising goal of $20,000 (we raised $14,470 here, which was used to secure the win) to $45,000 to cover the anticipated costs of the appeal.

NOTE: The amount above reflected as raised to date should be reduced by $14,470 to ascertain how much of the $25,000 we have raised thus far for the appeal.

Like before, all donations (less GoFundMe transaction fees of less than 3%) will be held in a separate WPOA bank account and be used solely for litigation costs (attorneys’ fees/costs, costs of hiring experts, if necessary, etc.).

The WPOA will keep all donors and WPOA members regularly apprised of the status of work here as we move forward. And we soon will be uploading the court documents to our website, wpoa.org.

Thank you for considering donating to help us protect Corolla!

ATTENTION: SAGA is barreling forward with its enormous new development on Route 12 and Herring Street, now set to include a 172-room hotel AND 127 multi-family residential units, numerous business frontages, and hundreds of nonpermeable parking spaces.

Is a project of this magnitude in the best interests of Corolla? HARDLY!

Not only is the proposed SAGA project inconsistent with the surrounding area and the existing Currituck County-approved Land Use Plan (adopted June 20, 2022), it will place an incredible strain on Corolla infrastructure that is already overburdened and, on the brink.
More specifically, adverse impacts include:

• Emergency services including: fire, ambulance, law enforcement, LifeFlight, and Ocean Rescue;
• Beach erosion and overcrowding;
• Groundwater and Storm runoff issues;
• Increased pollution and other environmental issues;
• Increased traffic and road deterioration;
• Strained evacuation plans and evacuation safety;
• Inadequate schools;
• Even further limiting of affordable housing access for employees and year-round residents;
• Lost business revenues; and
• Identifying and supporting significantly more volunteer fire and EMS services (without adding any additional full-time residents).

And these are just a few of the dire impacts on Corolla. Put plainly, this proposed SAGA project will undoubtedly endanger the public health and safety of Corolla residents and visitors.

Yet the Currituck County Board of Commissioners recently approved this proposed SAGA project. Despite the associated risks to public health and safety and the fact that the proposed project is inconsistent with the Land Use Plan approved by these very Commissioners last year!

Given the above and all that is at stake, the Whalehead Property Owners Association (“WPOA”) has retained an attorney and will take legal action, challenging the proposed SAGA project. As a result, and to make this effort possible, WPOA is soliciting donations to help us fund the litigation costs.

All donations (less GoFundMe transaction fees of less than 3%) will be held in a separate WPOA bank account and be used solely for litigation costs (attorneys’ fees/costs, costs of hiring experts, if necessary, etc.).

The WPOA will keep all donors and WPOA members regularly apprised of the status of work here as we move forward.
