The Palm Aire community in Pompano Beach, FL, is facing a critical moment. For decades, a land use agreement and a 1985 settlement have protected our neighborhood, limiting development to 10,631 residential units. Now, the City of Pompano Beach is attempting to revise these protections, opening the door to potential large-scale development that could change the character of our community forever. While immediate development is not guaranteed, removing these longstanding agreements would leave Palm Aire vulnerable, especially given the City’s history of being developer-friendly. ClubLink, the Canadian company that owns our three golf courses, has already sold off similar properties in nearby communities, which are now being developed. To date, neither ClubLink nor the City has expressed any interest in signing a new settlement agreement with the community to assure protections against additional attempts to rezone and develop the golf courses.
In response, a group of dedicated homeowners has filed a class action lawsuit against the City and developers, arguing that the 1985 agreement should remain in place. These neighbors have shouldered the legal costs so far, but as the case grows, it’s time for the entire community to step up. The lawsuit is our best chance to ensure that a judge will decide the case or require meaningful negotiations, giving Palm Aire a seat at the table to determine our future.
