My name is Shane, and Major is my service dog. A federal judge just granted a permanent injunction, and after nearly 600 days alone in a kennel, Major has a path back to me.
How we got here
In March 2025, a hit-and-run driver injured Major's leg on a walk. While I went for help, a stranger tried to lift him into her car, and he bit her. Animal control officers classified it as a provoked bite due to his injury, but the City seized him anyway and pursued a court order to euthanize him. Major has lived in isolation at Austin Animal Center ever since.
I fought the euthanasia order in state court and lost. Then you started sharing Major's story. That attention brought us pro bono attorneys who took the case to federal court and won. I owe them, and every one of you who shared, more than I can say.
What happens now
The court approved a plan for Major's release. Major will move to a private, secure decompression site at an undisclosed location, and I will stay on site with him around the clock. After this long in confinement, he needs a structured decompression, and he needs his handler there for it. Professionals will direct the entire process.
What your donation covers
My attorneys handled this case for free, so none of this money goes to legal fees. I expect costs of about $25,000. Housing makes up the bulk, since Major and I will live on site together for the full decompression period. The rest covers:
* Veterinary fees
* Professional trainer fees
* Supplies Major needs for the duration
Every dollar goes directly to these costs. If any funds remain when the decompression period ends, they will go toward Major's ongoing care.
Major has waited long enough. The court opened the door. Please help me get him through it, and share this page.
I will share updates as my legal counsel and the veterinary professionals guiding this process allow. Thank you all again for your continued support.
