Hello, my name is Cyn Hollingshead and I am fundraising on behalf of a dear community member, Logan Rhodes.
As of April 14, 2025 Logan was approved for 6 months of rental assistance through Care Oregon. Due to the program's tremendous backlog, Logan's case is still waiting to be assigned to a payment provider. This has led to them falling behind on rent and they are now facing eviction. Their initial court hearing is to take place June 26, 2025. Their pro-bono legal representative has advised that they have until at least July 14, 2022 for their trial to take place and to pay in full in order to stay housed. see document in photos. The combination of Logan's fixed SSDI income, complex health issues (see full account of medical conditions listed below), bedridden status, need for wheelchair accessibility as well as for a zero covid environment limits their options for finding a new housing situation. They have been trying to relocate for the last year without any luck. Portland's severe housing shortage crisis complicates matters even more.
Logan does not come from generational wealth. They have been disowned by their biological family since coming out as a gay trans non-binary person. We are at a critical moment and desperately need to raise funds in order to keep Logan housed, safe and able to access ongoing medical care. Unhoused people face incredibly dangerous and traumatic conditions. Disabled and trans unhoused people are at a much higher risk of death. As a predominantly bedridden person, Logan's health would take a sharp decline that they wouldn't be able to survive.
Logan relies on a sole fixed income from SSDI, the monthly total being $1234 whereas their rent is $1487. For the last year they have used their entire SSDI back-pay settlement to subsidize the difference between these amounts, but that savings has now run out. The last minute nature of this fundraiser was caused by Home Forward rescinding an offer of a subsidized low income apartment (due to a change in the order of their selection process) after having assured them for over a month that they had been approved for it.
Logan's Current Medical State:
As a result of acquiring Covid early on, Logan has experienced extreme health complications including an increased severity to many pre-existing conditions, the physical manifestation of two latent genetic health disorders, and 3+ years of total social isolation. Since then Logan's life and future have been placed on a downward trajectory, and have remained largely out of their control. Logan worked so hard to create a life that they had just begun to flourish in and having their security and independence stripped away from them has been an incredibly devastating experience.
Logan has been battling a decline in their health since 2018. They have been house/bed bound for over three years, and are now an ambulatory wheelchair user. They have been diagnosed with: Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Myotonia Congenita, Ulcerative Colitis (IBD), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Psoriasis, Atlantoaxial Spondylosis, Inflammatory Arthritis, and Chronic Dry Eye Syndrome. The overlapping of / interaction between the symptoms of all of these conditions is overwhelming. Meanwhile Logan is trying to navigate this experience without family support or any type of caregiver. The adding on of housing insecurity and now being on the brink of eviction is truly terrifying for them.
Everyday our friend experiences extensive muscle pain, inflammation, weakness, stiffness, cramps, and paralysis; widespread inflammatory arthritic joint pain, gastrointestinal pain/dysfunction, aural migraines, immune system dysfunction, a rapid irregular heart rate, lung and liver dysfunction, intense fatigue (this phrase doesn’t even do it justice), fevers, dizziness, sound and light sensitivity, body temperature dysregulation, painful rashes with secondary skin infections, severe sleep apnea and other chronic sleep disturbances.
Logan struggles to use their hands and can only stand for a few minutes at a time while using a mobility aid. Their heart rate and blood pressure can only function somewhat properly when they are laying down. They must perform every movement with extreme caution in their fragile state as any movement can lead to muscle injury that will take months to heal, requiring a high dose course of corticosteroids that are accompanied by hellish side effects and dangerous health consequences. When Logan can move, they only have enough energy for a few minutes before overwhelming exhaustion kicks in, forcing them to lie down completely flat for hours while they recover. A raised heart rate can lead to days/weeks of unbearable symptoms including sleeping uncontrollably for up to 20 hours at a time. Once they do wake up they are then met with severe full body pain, fever and a migraine
Logan can barely manage to perform daily self care activities, and doing so almost always leads to a flare in their symptoms. They have had to make an incredible amount of adjustments to how/when they perform basic activities such as showering infrequently / while sitting down, eating low cost precooked meals / food that doesn't require them to cook, and relying on friends to take out the trash./ bring in mail / grocery shop / do laundry. Logan has been trying to get approved for a Medicaid home care aide for over two years, but it has been a complicated process that is no longer covered now that they are on Medicare. Even after being abused and ultimately disowned by their family of origin, they have reached out to certain members for help as their situation grew more desperate and they were refused. Logan has fiercely advocated for themself over the last five years. They have stood up to the medical industrial complex, endlessly researched their health conditions to find answers / treatments, and pushed back when they were being dismissed. They have scoured the local landscape for any available resources and assistance that might improve their situation, and made countless phone calls / emails. Almost any moment they have that is not spent on basic survival is spent on trying to find assistance and a path forward. Amidst all of this they still prioritize showing up for their community in whatever ways that they can.
Logan needs us now more than ever, please help us keep them safe. Thank you <3
