Lake Superior Academy is a small, rural public Montessori school serving children in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Our students learn not just in classrooms, but outdoors—on trails, in gardens, and in quiet spaces designed for curiosity, reflection, and growth.

That peace has been shattered.

A large, out-of-state bitcoin mining operation—Odessa—has moved directly across the street from our school. The constant industrial noise has disrupted outdoor learning, affected student well-being, and threatens the very environment our school was built around.

We are not trying to shut down a business.

We are simply asking for reasonable protections for children.

But standing up to a corporation with deep pockets has come at a steep cost.

Lake Superior Academy operates on a very small public-school budget. Every dollar matters. Yet to advocate for our students, we have already spent over $23,000 in legal fees—money that would otherwise go toward classroom supplies, instructional materials, and student support. And the legal process is not over.

For a school like ours, these costs are overwhelming.
