Protect Lake Charlevoix Shoreland Legal Fund

We are creating a legal fund to stop the destruction of Lake

Charlevoix's shoreland by the "Law Boathouse" project -- actually it's

an event and dining facility that would be used for a private

corporation in a residential zone -- involving the excavation of an

artificial boat basin and channel.

Hayes Township's "Shoreland Protection Strip" -- the first 50 feet from

the lake -- prohibits excavation. But Township officials have bent over

backwards to permit the project. While the Township's early permissions

are now expired, the Zoning Administrator says he is poised to permit

the project again. I have appealed this determination to the Township's

Zoning Board of Appeals.

On May 27, 2022 we learned the US Army Corps of Engineers proffered a

federal permit to the property owners, Scott and Debra Law.

In the past weeks we've also learned the State of Michigan's Department

of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE)'s permit issued in 2020

was actually issued in error, an EGLE supervisor now admits in writing was "incorrectly reviewed"

saying he is "sick" about it, and he is "unable to defend this decision."

We are exploring all legal options to stop the project. While legal

actions are pursued by individuals, we appreciate community

contributions as we engage additional legal help to fight to preserve

Lake Charlevoix's shoreland. So many people in the community have asked

how they can help, and this is one way.

can stop this project that will be so harmful to the lake and that is

contrary to the public interest.
