Protecting Hilma af Klint's Vision
Friends of Hilma af Klint Foundation is a U.S.-based nonprofit devoted to protecting Hilma af Klint's legacy — keeping her body of work whole and honoring the spiritual, non-commercial purpose she intended.
In recent years, however, members of the Hilma af Klint Foundation's board in Sweden have taken steps toward commercializing her art — a direction that runs counter to both her original vision and the Foundation's founding mission.
Hilma's paintings were never meant to be separated or sold. Each one is part of a greater whole, like a chapter in a book. When the sequence is broken, the story — and the message she hoped to share — begins to fall apart.
Today, this conflict has led to major legal proceedings in Sweden. One case is currently before the County Board, and another will be heard in 2026 at the Stockholm District Court. More than a century after Hilma created her extraordinary body of work, a profound divide has emerged within the Swedish foundation created to protect it.
On one side is the af Klint family, committed to preserving the collection as an interconnected whole and upholding its non-commercial purpose. On the other are board members accused of pursuing actions that serve personal financial interests, contradicting the Foundation’s original mission.
What is at stake?
The integrity and unity of The Paintings for the Temple and the broader collection
Like chapters in a book, each painting has its place in the sequence. Board members' attempts to sell individual works would break the intended order and scramble the intended message.
The Swedish Foundation's commitment to Hilma's non-commercial purpose
Since its establishment in 1972, the Foundation's express purpose has been to preserve and share Hilma's work in alignment with her non-commercial vision — not to treat it as a market commodity.
Transparency, accountability, and proper governance
Any actions taken by the Swedish Foundation must follow its statutes, ensure proper review, and maintain public trust through ethical oversight.
