Hi, my name is Sean and I'm raising money to treat a five month old boy with a cataract in both eyes.
The boy was blind from birth and needs a simple operation to see. The operation needs to be done soon, because the brain's ability to process visual information develops only at a very early age.
I met Baby Matthew and his mother in June, at the screening camp where he was diagnosed, and I saw for myself the white opacity inside both of his pupils that are blocking his vision. Nowadays, surgeons can easily correct this condition by replacing the opaque lens in each eye with an artificial lens. The procedure is quick and simple.
In Matthew's case, the treatment for cataract is needed urgently because if it is delayed, then he will suffer lifelong deprivation amblyopia, a highly debilitating lack of visual acuity that impacts nearly every aspect of daily life, akin to blindness.
Matthew is in a very poor rural community in Africa and unfortunately his family cannot afford to pay for the operation.
The total cost will be approximately 440 US dollars (1.6 million Ugandan shillings). This includes both eye operations, preoperative tests, (e.g. malaria, CBC), transport, post operative treatment (e.g. steroidal antibiotic eye-drops).
Any support for Baby Matthew will be greatly appreciated.
