My dad has been preparing to have a prosthetic leg put on. For the past three months, he was told it would be covered by insurance. Yet he just found out yesterday his insurance won't cover it unless he meets his new $6,950 deductible for the new year. He had an appointment set for January 20th excitedly anticipating the day, but now we have to somehow come up with $6,950 out of pocket. Even though he has been ready for his prosthetic leg since mid-December, every doctor refused to schedule him before the end of the year. He was told January 20th was the absolute earliest they could fit him in.

His lower leg had to be amputated in late October due to an ongoing battle with a severe infection hosted in his left foot which eventually developed into charcot foot (all of the bones in his foot became fractured, broken, and bent). He had been fighting infections in this foot since June 2018. My dad desperately wanted the doctors to try saving it to see if it could eventually heal and eliminate the infection. After over a year of maintaining a strict diet, staying off of his foot, elevating it, using a wheelchair, and making his way up to just needing a boot cast, the infection still persisted and began targeting other weak parts of his body, such as his right hand. On October 29th of 2019 the doctors ultimately decided it was best to amputate his lower leg to completely remove the infection or else risk the infection spreading to his heart and threatening his life. My dad has been unable to work since the amputation and has absolutely no savings to his name due to all of the other medical expenses across the past two years building up.
Anyone who knows my dad knows that he is one of the most hard-working, resilient, and selfless people on the planet. No matter what life throws his way, my dad always tries his best to maintain a positive and light outlook. He even made jokes about wanting to be a pirate for Halloween after he just had his leg amputated in the hospital. His nurses, doctors, church community, friends, and family can all attest to how funny and positive his attitude has been these past two years despite the enormous pain and trauma he has experienced. He has worked as a manual laborer the past fifteen years for his apartment landlord and still managed to do an amazing job being a father to my sister and I despite financial difficulties. Whenever someone needs help with fixing or building anything, they call my dad first. He is always graciously willing to assist. In his free time, he loves to volunteer at his church with building maintenance, security, and the administrative council. It is incredibly unfair that we are now forced to create this GoFundMe to get his prosthetic, but there is nothing my sister and I want more than to see our moving freely. Any amount of financial assistance is immensely appreciated, it puts my dad that much closer to being able to walk again!
