Proposals for the Interpretation of a Dream -Nurain's Thesis

My name is Nurain Amin, and I am currently in the pre-production phase of my thesis short film as I complete my Bachelor’s degree at Emerson College and Paris College of Art. The film will be shot in two parts - the first in Early January 2025 in Singapore and the second in mid-February in Paris. Any contributions toward bringing this project to life would be greatly appreciated!

Proposals for the Interpretation of a Dream is an experimental film that presents two avenues of oneirocriticism; one aligned with religion and the other with superstition. This collision of faiths not only aids the main character, Safia, in her journey of dream decryption, but also calls on the ambiguity of the subconscious and its inherent inability to be tethered to a single line of logic.

I draw inspiration from my own experiences with my family and oneirocriticism as I was raised Malay-Muslim in Singapore. Since childhood, the women in my family, particularly my mother and grandmother, have served as informal interpreters and consultants of dreams. The decision to unpack and exemplify this experience comes from a personal confrontation of these memories as well as a desire to critically question and analyse the role of interpretation in my psyche and subconscious perspective.

I will be working collaboratively with a producer, Artem Bakatov, and a DOP, Quintana Jones, who both have an invaluable experience of numerous independent and small-budget short films.

Artem has produced 12 films over his time in the degree. Quintana has shot a number of experimental and narrative films. She has a unique approach towards visual storytelling, exactly what is needed for this film.
