PRONK! is people-powered:
100% free and 100% volunteer run, but it costs some bucks to run. It can't happen without YOU, Kickstarter supporters...

What is PRONK? The Providence HONK Festival (PRONK!) is a grassroots, neighborhood event made possible by the support of local folk like you. On Monday October 14th, 2019, aka Indigenous People's Day ("Columbus Day"), the sounds and sights of street bands from here and around the country and around the world will fill our fair city as part of the tenth annual festival.

PRONK RECLAIMS the streets with brass, beats, and feet! We are a victory riot of local favorites like the Extraordinary Rendition Band, What Cheer? Brigade, and Kickin' Brass. We are a cacophonous street celebration with 200+ musicians from 20+ traveling bands (New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, Austin, New York, Boston.)  PRONK is part of a national/global HONK! movement with sister festivals in Austin; Detroit; NYC; Pittsburgh; Seattle; Wollongong, Australia; and Rio de Janeiro. No wires, no amps, off the grid. Bands are inspired to travel great distances at personal expense to joyously celebrate their music in the streets surrounding Kennedy Plaza and South Water Street as part of the Providence HONK Parade. PRONK! BELIEVES artists and musicians have something to contribute to social justice movements. Last year, 15+ community organizations and 250+ students, organizers, and volunteers worked hard to build community and communicate important messages in the parade alongside musical acts. Where will Kickstarter funds go? Hundreds of volunteers, businesses, and organizers give time, supplies, and funds to make PRONK! come to life each year. Your contribution of dollar$ will go directly to:

- FEEDING and HOUSING bands
- building parade materials
- buying supplies for participating artists and community organizations
- providing bathrooms and so much more.

PRONK is a family-friendly party: Our Kickstarter goal of $5,000 is just a small part of $15,000 it actually takes to run the festival and we'd be so grateful if you'd send what you can spare our way so we can all dance and raise our voices in the streets together again this October 14.

More from our manifesto, PRONK: SUPPORTS education & questioning of mainstream narratives; CELEBRATES Providence; IS NOT consumer-driven; ENCOURAGES youth to engage with music and art as a platform for social change; AIMS to build relationships between and among artists and organizations; IS NOT a Columbus Day parade; DOES NOT support complacency and unquestioned acceptance. ASPIRES to spark meaningful dialogues around challenges dividing our communities; IS a celebration of resistance to consumerism, colonialism, hatred, and injustice; SEEKS to utilize the the visual and auditory noise of artists and local, national, and international street bands to highlight the important work of activists making change in our own community. We, the community of PRONK! supporters and organizers, recognize that we have a long way to go. Join us as we take a step forward again this year, won't you?

Risks and challenges
Above all, we want YOU to have a great time at PRONK, so we put a lot of energy into producing the actual event. Our rewards are mostly centered on the event itself, including participating in some extra way like wearing drums during a set or hanging out backstage with bands, with the exception of the signed posters, bandanas, and t-shirts. We print the posters before the event and have bands sign them day-of, and while collecting autographs can be a little overwhelming amid the chaos of the event, we're confident that we'll do a good job! Just pick up your reward at the PRONK INFO/MERCH TABLE!

PRONK's fiscal sponsor is the What Cheer Art Company. The What Cheer Art Company enables Rhode Island artists to create and fulfill projects and visions that they would not otherwise be able to do themselves.
