Promise's Recovery Fund

A pet owner’s greatest fear is that their beloved member of the family falls ill. This is what our family faced over Memorial weekend. Promise, our 9 year old Australian shepherd, became sick. Her illness seemed to come on instantly and severely. We quickly rushed her to the Seattle Veterinary Services ER in Kirkland. As they checked her vitals, they informed us that her heartrate was extremely fast and that they needed to take her back to see the doctor immediately. The doctor diagnosed her as having pyometra, an infection of the uterus. He informed us that she would need surgery. The doctor solemnly explained that she might not be able to wait until after the Memorial Day holiday weekend. As a result, they would need to call in an emergency surgeon, resulting in much higher expenses.

We talked about our options. As long as the surgery went well, Promise should make a full recovery. However, she’s an older dog, and our family had some large expenses the prior year. Our talk did not last long, as we decided that we could not possibly deny Promise the surgery that would save her life. Anna, 21 years old and currently independently paying for college, placed the entirety of the bill on her credit card. For Promise, we would figure out a way to come up with the money.

Promise’s surgery was a success. In addition to pyometra, the infection had leaked, requiring more antibiotics. Promise stayed in the ER for 3 days as she needed to be monitored for her increased heartrate. She is now home and, despite needing to take regular medications, is almost back to her old self.

We want to thank all of our friends for your outpour of support through this endeavor. Your positive words, prayers, and inspiring stories helped our family through one of its darkest struggles. The dog community is our family and we appreciate you all. Our vet bill was over $6,000, and we are now trying to raise money to cover her expenses. Every dollar and share helps to relieve the burden on our family and we thank you.
