My mother, Mel, built her dream high in the mountains of Kentucky, Westmoreland, where the clouds touch the trees and the air smells of earth and rain. She poured her soul into Mel’s Botanical Retreat — a place she created with love, plants, and purpose, where people could heal and feel alive again. I grew up beside her, hands in the soil, learning how beauty could grow even in the hardest ground. But when COVID-19 came, I lost her — and my unborn baby brother — in 2021. Her dream became my promise: to keep it alive, no matter what.
Then came Hurricane Melissa.
The storm tore through everything we had left. Every cabin, every garden bed, every tree that once whispered my mother’s name — gone. The mountain looks unrecognizable now. Our family homes are destroyed, our neighbors are hungry, and sickness spreads under scraps of zinc and plastic. Nights are cold, and there is no power, no service, no peace — only grief and survival. The mountain that once gave us life now feels like it’s holding its breath, waiting for a new beginning.
But I still believe in my mother’s dream. I still believe in the healing power of this mountain and in the love she planted in its soil. I want to rebuild — not just for me, but for her, for our family, and for everyone who once found peace in this place. Your support will help us bring light, food, and shelter back to the people here and rebuild Mel’s Botanical Retreat from the ashes of what was lost.
The photos below show only a glimpse of our heartbreak — the wreckage, the silence, and the hope that refuses to die.
UPDATE:❤️
I’ve been doing a lot of cleaning here at MBR clearing fallen trees, trimming damaged plants, and opening up the pathways so we can move around and assess the property more easily.
Our next major goals are to purchase a chainsaw and a generator, which are urgently needed as we still do not have electricity. I wanted to update everyone much sooner, but phone reception has been on and off since the hurricane, depending on the day.
Thank you all so much for every donation, every share, and every prayer. Your support truly means everything to me as I work to rebuild Mel’s Botanical Retreat in my mother’s honor in these difficult times.
